A.B. Daley Elementary School Grade 1 teacher Alana Millard will represent Livingstone Range School Division at the annual Alberta School Boards Association Zone 6 Edwin Parr Teacher Awards banquet in Taber on May 15.

The award honours outstanding first-year teachers in Alberta, and according to A.B. Daley Principal Jolene Becker, Millard’s nomination is well-deserved.

“Alana brings leadership, enthusiasm, and passion for making a difference in students’ lives to work each day,” said Becker. “Alana is leading our School Council leadership team with Assistant Principal Alli Martin, and they have developed a kindness theme to help children recognize the importance of kindness in their daily lives.”

Kindness and volunteering are important to Millard. “Our School Council is working on spreading kindness throughout the school by doing little things such as greeting students at the door and giving out kindness pencils,” said Millard. “It’s really fun to be able to foster a love of volunteering and kindness in the young people in this building, who will go on to be the leaders of tomorrow.”

Millard has already made many contributions to her students and the school. “She has taught her Grade 1 students yoga and then had her class teach our Division 1 students yoga during indoor recess in the gym,” said Becker. “She and Grade 1 teacher Jillian Spencer have organized a seniors buddy reading program with our local seniors’ home, and they meet regularly to read together.”

Teaching is a lifelong dream come true for Millard. “I realized I wanted to be a teacher in junior high when I got the opportunity to volunteer in a Grade 1 classroom. I fell in love with working with young students: their enthusiasm for life and learning is contagious. Now I have the privilege to be surrounded by such excitement each and every day.”

School boards across the province nominate one exceptional candidate for the Edwin Parr Teacher Award to their ASBA zone committee each year. The successful nominees from each Zone are honoured with a gold watch and framed certificate bearing the Association’s logo at the ASBA Fall General Meeting in November. As the 2019 LRSD nominee, we congratulate Alana Millard and wish her the best of luck at the awards banquet.

“I feel extremely honored to be nominated for this award!” said Millard. “I cannot believe how lucky I am to start my career in such a supportive school, community, and division. Everyone is very receptive to new ideas and collaboration. I hope to continue to learn from them and with them for many years.”
