Students from AB Daley and JT Foster schools in Nanton had the opportunity to attend Farm Safety Day in Calgary on Wednesday, May 9, and got to speak with CTV Calgary reporters about their experience.

JT Foster seventh grader Keelyn Armstrong responded to reporter Kevin Fleming about what she was learning at the event.

"To be safe when you're around big machinery, and around horses and cattle and any animal," said Keelyn.

According to AB Daley Principal Audrey Kluin the event, sponsored by the Calgary Stampede, welcomes grade 6 to 9 classes to a free day of learning aimed at enhancing students’ awareness and understanding of rural and farm safety.

"Students, teachers, and parent chaperones have access to interactive activities and information stations on a variety of topics including equipment safety, working with electricity, first aid and more," says Kluin.

Many students in the Nanton area come from farms and ranches where they may be involved in activities that bring them into contact with machinery and livestock, and so will particularly benefit from the safety messages and demonstrations shared at Farm Safety Day.

Cole Blades, another JT Foster seventh grader from a ranching family, told the reporter "In the city, kids can't really work and have jobs, whereas on a ranch you're kind of born working!"

Students living in towns and cities also learn important safety information and have fun at the event.

"This year’s Farm Safety Day [is] full of many new and impactful stations for students, including the CASA BeGrainSafe trailer, a rollover simulator, ATV safety and livestock handling," says Principal Kluin. "Even if you’ve been here in the past, we promise to have new and exciting learnings for [the] students!"

Knowledge gained from the day fulfills a number of Alberta school curriculum outcomes in health, agriculture studies and other areas.
