Education Week Tournament of Books
A.B. Daley Book Club is hosting our first ever Tournament of Books, which is an event open to all students from K-6. We started with eight titles, and each week students read or listen to or watch the books performed and then vote on the match-ups using QR Codes.
Our students are excited about reading the books, so we have guest student readers who have volunteered to create videos of themselves reading their favorites, which are then posted on our website and shared via Twitter. They have also created trivia questions for each day, based on the books read to help students practice recall & comprehension skills. Our goal for this program was to spend a few weeks promoting literacy, home reading and listening skills across all of our grade levels & get kids “book talking”. It also gives our book club members a chance to share their love of reading and to lead a literacy community.
Our Book Club this year had a membership of thirty students from grades 4-6. Thanks to generous donations from community groups, we were able to provide each of our students with four novels throughout the year which they chose, and then met four times throughout the year to discuss our books and socialize with friends who love to read! Next year, we are hoping to be able to offer this program again and are hoping the Tournament of Books creates some “buzz” around our club and participation continues to grow!
